Beyond Cage-Free Coalition: Expert Coalition

Major animal welfare funders have invested millions in corporate welfare reforms, particularly “cage-free” egg campaigns. Yet research suggests these systems offer limited welfare improvements, often perpetuate suffering, and can create additional environmental harms and increased pandemic threats. By increasing consumer trust in animal farming, these campaigns can risk perpetuating humanewashing and entrenching and expanding animal exploitation and slaughter. In Defense of Animals is proud to join the Beyond Cage-Free Coalition in urging the Effective Altruist Community and the AI industry to redirect philanthropic resources toward plant-based food system transformation. This shift addresses animal suffering at its root while helping combat the climate crisis, protect the environment and wild animals, improve public health, prevent pandemics, and strengthen global food security.
