About this event

Learn effective writing for animals! In this free Zoom class, you’ll learn: - Why writing for animals matters - Writing tips and tricks for compelling readers to action - How to write, pitch, and publish an op-ed in the news - Other strategies for getting animal issues, or any cause you care, about in the news You’ll leave this class with a list of writing dos and don’ts, a short guide to ethical storytelling, templates for op-eds and pitch emails, and much more. Whether you’re a seasoned writer or a total beginner, this class is for you! Register here for the Zoom link. ## Why Writing for Animals Matters ## Local papers reach millions of readers every week. Published articles on animal issues reach a broad spectrum of people. Writing is a way for animal advocacy to reach people it never otherwise would. And, most importantly, coverage of animal issues effectively raises public awareness and causes many readers to reduce their consumption of animals and animal products. ## About Your Instructor ## Julie Knopp has been working at the intersection of communications, education, and nonprofit leadership for more than a decade. Julie’s media strategy work has resulted in coverage with National Public Radio (NPR), HuffPost, the British Broadcasting Company (BBC), and other prominent news outlets. Julie’s own writing has been featured in the New York Daily News, Minneapolis Star Tribune, Madison Capital Times, and other media outlets. Julie holds a Master of Arts in Teaching, which she uses to transmit her talent for media strategy and writing to passionate people like you. The group will create and support pro-animal writing in Minnesota. We will meet online on the last Wednesday of each month at 6:30pm, where we will: -review recent op-ed opportunities about animal welfare and rights; -peer review writing that we have done to strengthen it; and if there’s time left over, there will be quiet time set aside for writing. -Even if you can’t make it to this May class, you can register here to get the Zoom link for future meetings of the writing group. This Writing for Animals class is valuable as a stand-alone class or as an entry point for the Writing for Animals Group. The tools and tips you gain from the class are a good foundation for whatever advocacy writing you end up doing. Be prepared to make a big impact with what you learn!
