**ANNOUNCEMENT:** **DU Animal Law - "From Cattle Rancher’s Wife to Farmed Animal Advocate"** **Tuesday, September 29** **6–8PM** **University of Denver Sturm College of Law, Room 165** Join the Animal Law Program for an evening talk with Renee King-Sonnen! Renee, founder of Rowdy Girl Sanctuary and author of Rowdy Girl: Confessions of a Vegan Cattle Rancher, will share the unlikely and deeply personal story of how a Texas cattle ranch was transformed into one of the first documented beef cattle ranches to become a vegan farmed animal sanctuary. In this talk, Renee will take the audience inside her and her husband Tommy’s journey from ranching and raising cattle for slaughter to questioning everything they had inherited, believed, and participated in. Through love, grief, awakening, and hard-won transformation, their story became a powerful example of what is possible when compassion challenges tradition. Renee will also offer a preview of her forthcoming book, which explores the emotional, spiritual, and ethical reckoning that led to the birth of Rowdy Girl Sanctuary. The book reveals the intimate realities of ranch life, the bond between humans and farmed animals, and the courage it takes to choose a different path — not only for oneself, but for the animals whose lives depend on that choice. Renee will reflect on the larger implications of her story: how farmed animals are viewed under culture, commerce, and law; why their lives matter beyond their economic use; and how personal transformation can become a catalyst for broader social change.
