Medelhavet är världens mest överfiskade hav och bläckfiskarna hotas av bland annat illegalt fiske. Filmen följer Sea Shepherd Globals arbete i norra Grekland, där volontärer tillsammans med lokala fiskare, forskare och myndigheter kämpar för att stoppa det illegala fisket och drar upp tiotusentals olagliga fällor från havets djup. Before the Last Octopus är regisserad av Robbie Newby, en brittisk filmare från Cornwall med mer än 25 års erfarenhet. Han började sin karriär på BBC Wales med grafik för nyheter och sport och har sedan dess arbetat med regi och produktion inom bland annat musik, mode och film. Efter ett projekt tillsammans med Vivienne Westwood och PETA började Robbie alltmer fokusera på berättelser med ett etiskt och miljömässigt perspektiv. Sedan 2016 har han arbetat omfattande tillsammans med Sea Shepherd Global och dokumenterat organisationens arbete till havs i bland annat Medelhavet, Afrika, Centralamerika och Antarktis.
