Hawaiʻi Elephant Rights Supreme Court Hearing: NhRP v. Honolulu Zoo
Organized by Nonhuman Rights Project
Date and time
Monday | November 9 2026 | 3:00 pm
About this event
Join us for a historic moment in animal rights law as the Hawaiʻi Supreme Court hears oral arguments on behalf of Mari and Vaigai, two wild-born Asian elephants held captive at the Honolulu Zoo for decades.
Our case asks a fundamental question: Is an autonomous, cognitively complex nonhuman animal entitled to the basic right to liberty? The Hawaiʻi Supreme Court is now the third state high court in U.S. history to hear arguments on this issue—a testament to the growing legal recognition that science and law must align regarding who elephants are and how they suffer in captivity.
