About this event

On Wednesday, October 21st at 4pm, we will have a short protest/speak out demo for the animals, then enter the Felicia Mahood Multipurpose Center to speak to the West LA Planning Commission! BACKSTORY: Los Angeles City Council Member Traci Park heard us loud and clear, as her key staff member listened - at the last hearing - to our many powerful arguments to ban development on Bird Island. So, Councilwoman Park OVERTURNED the West LA Planning Commission’s terrible decision to allow development on Bird Island near the Ballona Wetlands, sending the issue back to them to RE-CONSIDER! This gives us ANOTHER CHANCE to speak truth to power and permanently save the animals who call Bird Island home. We need TWICE as many passionate animal lovers to show up at this hearing! WE CAN WIN AND MAKE HISTORY! Snacks will be served at the meeting. Join us after the hearing for FREE ice cream at Yoga-Urt! WHY IS BIRD ISLAND (near the 90 Freeway and Ballona Wetlands Ecological Reserve) SO IMPORTANT TO WILDLIFE? *Vital Migratory Stopover: Serves as a critical resting and feeding sanctuary for thousands of migratory birds navigating the Pacific Flyway. *Nesting and Roosting Haven: Provides secure coastal nesting grounds for vulnerable species including egrets, cormorants, herons, and pelicans. *Biodiversity Hotspot: Supports a rich local ecosystem sustaining diverse marine life, sea lions, otters, and delicate coastal flora. *Rare Urban Wilderness: Acts as an irreplaceable natural oasis amid heavy urban development along the Southern California coastline. *Buffer Against Extinction: Protects local populations on the front lines of the accelerating sixth mass extinction crisis. *Natural Shoreline Defense: Contributes to coastal resilience by preserving natural habitats that buffer against erosion and extreme weather. *Irreplaceable Ecosystem: Represents a fragile habitat where once lost, complex food webs and native species cannot be artificially replicated. *Sanctuary for Rooks and Breeding Pairs: Offers isolated, predator-safe terrain essential for successful chick rearing and seasonal reproduction. *Legacy for Future Generations: Preserves a living natural classroom and coastal heritage asset for public appreciation, education, and ecological study. *Ethical Stewardship: Honors our moral responsibility to safeguard voiceless wild species and coexist harmoniously with neighboring marine and avian life. *This confluence with these rivers and the ocean tides entering the estuary via Ballona Creek, this is a very high bio-productivity area. Lots of fish and other marine life pass through here. Several bird species have nested here or roosted here. Away from potential harm from roads or other human intrusions. Black-necked Stilt, American Osprey, Snowy Egret, Great Blue Heron, and many more.
