PUBLIC HEARING TO BAN HORSE CARRIAGES JULY 15, CITY HALL, MANHATTAN For years, we’ve fought for this moment. Now it’s here! On Wednesday, July 15, the New York City Council Health Committee will hold the official public hearing on Romanch’s Law (Intro 943), formerly known as Ryder’s Law. It is the same legislation to ban horse carriages, renamed at the request of Romanch Mahajan’s family after their beloved 18-year-old son was tragically killed in a runaway horse carriage crash. Last month, 16-year-old carriage horse Deniz collapsed and died while pulling tourists through Central Park. Just one week later, 18-year-old Romanch Mahajan was killed while trying to save his mother after a runaway horse carriage crash in Central Park. These tragedies are not isolated incidents. They are part of a long pattern of violent runaway carriage crashes and the deaths of carriage horses on New York City’s streets and stables. No amount of new regulations or so-called “reforms” can prevent the next horse from spooking, bolting, and causing another tragedy. The only real solution is to permanently end NYC’s deadly horse carriages by passing Romanch’s Law. At the hearing, Romanch’s devastated family will be joined by equine experts, veterinarians, horse sanctuaries, national animal protection organizations, public safety advocates, and compassionate New Yorkers urging the City Council to pass Romanch’s Law. This is our opportunity to finally close the cruel and deadly chapter of horse carriages in New York City’s history. Together, we can give these horses the future they deserve: retirement in loving sanctuary homes and on protected farms, where they can finally run free on grass, form lifelong bonds with other horses, and simply be horses.
