About this event
Mothers Day - SUNDAY, May 10 from 10 to 12! This Sunday, hordes of patrons will stream into the Los Angeles Zoo on the day designated to honor mothers in our society. Dads and kids will have chosen the zoo thinking it a fun and appropriate place to celebrate mom. An added bonus is there will be other great ape mothers and babies in the zoo too - three chimpanzees, one Bornean orangutan, and a Western lowland gorilla have given birth to five babies there in the last year. And since these primates are all pretty close to us humans on the evolutionary tree, zoogoer moms will be able to ooh and aah over how they look just like them in the way they hold their babies, cuddle and play with them, and reprimand them when they are naughty. So amazing, right? (Note however that some of these patrons wont believe in evolution - approximately 25%–37% of Americans dont. But that is another story, yet another example of ignorant human supremacist speciesism, which we can leave for another time.)
One big difference between those moms is the ticket holding ones can leave when they have had enough. If the nonhuman apes want to leave they cant because they are locked in. In the human world we would call them prisoners, in the zoo they are called "exhibits." Also when the zoo decides to separate and send the mom or the child to another zoo, they don't call that what it is either - kidnapping. Americans ostensibly have many rights, the animals in the zoo, including our cousins, have zero.
The zoo claims it is educational and we agree! Look at the things just mentioned which human families can learn on their outing. And those facts apply to the other animals too because, remember, kids, #zoosarejails!
Join us as we help make Mother's Day a memorable one for the whole family!
