This is despite the fact that industrial animal agriculture is a significant contributor to global greenhouse gas emissions and causes widespread suffering to farmed animals.🐄In recent years, high-profile litigation concerning the activities of industrial animal agriculture companies has focused on emissions and greenwashing, but fewer cases concentrate on animal welfare statutes, farmed animal transport regulations, or consumer protection. Animal law is under-utilised by lawyers, especially in the UK.🐄Join us for the first Legal Voices for the Future session to explore the intersection of animal law and climate litigation. Learn why climate lawyers should advocate for improved animal welfare, both as a goal in itself and as part of more complete and effective strategies to address climate change.This session will:✅️ provide an introduction to the climate impacts of industrial animal agriculture,✅️ explore recent and future trends in animal welfare and climate litigation, and✅️ compare and contrast animal law in several jurisdictions.We will also consider how climate lawyers can use their existing expertise to contribute in a practical way to this vitally important and dynamic area of law and advocacy.Panel⚖️Charlotte Edgar, disputes solicitor and animal lawyer, will chair a discussion on animal welfare and climate change litigation. We are delighted to welcome two legal experts to our Q&A panel: Edie Bowles, solicitor and founder of Advocates for Animals, and David Wolfe KC, public law barrister at Matrix chambers. ⚖️David Wolfe works as a public lawyer at Matrix supporting NGOs and campaigners tackling the climate and nature crises through legal action in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, including Wild Justice, River Action, Fighting Dirty, Transport Action Network, Friends of the Earth, WWF, Fish Legal, Badger Trust, Northern Ireland Badger Group, Blue Marine and Chris Packham CBE. ⚖️Edie Bowles is a solicitor and the founder and executive director of The Animal Law Foundation and the managing director of Advocates for Animals. She has advised almost all of the main animal protection organisations, smaller organisations and individuals across all animal protection law and campaigning. She often speaks on animal protection issues and has done so in the UK Parliament, the French Senat and the East African Legislative Assembly.Creative Content 📖Each of our monthly knowledge sessions will include a small group discussion of ‘creative content’. In this session we will consider an engaging excerpt from a thousand year old fable “The Animals’ Lawsuit Against Humanity”, by Anson Laytner and Dan Bridge.
