About this event
Join us to celebrate the handover of our petition calling for a Commissioner for Animals in Aotearoa
With over 30,000+ signatures – this is our opportunity to show the Government that New Zealanders believe in a system that works for animals, not against them.
Tuesday 03 Mar
12 PM
New Zealand Parliamentary Grounds, Wellington / Te Whanganui-a-Tara
Why are we gathering?
As it stands, the welfare of animals is overshadowed by the interests of the trade, entertainment, and agriculture sectors.
The current system is broken, but together, we believe there is a simple solution – the animals of Aotearoa New Zealand need independent representation at parliamentary level.
This petition has been supported by a massive range of incredible organisations across Aotearoa (and beyond) including SAFE, Animals Aotearoa, Animal Evac, Animal Save Aotearoa, Australian Alliance for Animals, Chained Dog Awareness NZ, Community Cat Coalition, Companion Animals NZ, Goat Welfare NZ, Greenpeace Aotearoa, Greyhound Protection League, HUHA, Māui & Hector's Dolphin Defenders, NZALA, NZAVS, Orca Research Trust, Vegan FTA, Voiceless, Wellington Rabbit Rescue, Whale Rescue, and World Animal Protection.
Please note:
– This will be a peaceful event open to the public and we ask that all attendees act respectfully and appropriately. Any displays of violence or aggression will not be tolerated, and anyone engaging in non‑peaceful behaviour will be asked to leave.
– As this event is taking place outside in windy (and often rainy) Wellington, we recommend dressing for the occasion and bringing some winter gear!
– Leashed companion animals are welcome if they are comfortable with large crowds and noise.
