About this event

πŸ“šThe first book we will be discussing in 2026 will be "The Serviceberry: Abundance and Reciprocity in the Natural World" by Robin Wall Kimmerer! This is a short book (~112 pages), so we'll be discussing the entire thing at our January meeting 🌟NEW THIS YEAR 🌟Based on the survey results (thanks to everyone who filled it out!), we are moving our monthly meeting to the last Monday of the month and starting a little later at 6:30pm. We are also shortening our meeting time to 90 minutes. πŸ’šAs always, arrive when you can and leave when you need to. We'll also be sticking with virtual/Zoom meetings for now! It's hard to balance a day and time that works for everyone, so we'll see how this goes for a few months to start. πŸ“– As an Indigenous scientist and author of Braiding Sweetgrass, Robin Wall Kimmerer harvests serviceberries alongside the birds, she considers the ethic of reciprocity that lies at the heart of the gift economy. How, she asks, can we learn from Indigenous wisdom and the plant world to reimagine what we value most? 🧐 For more information, including content warnings, visit: https://app.thestorygraph.com/browse?search_term=The%20Serviceberry:%20Abundance%20and%20Reciprocity%20in%20the%20Natural%20World πŸ“• Whether you're a seasoned activist or a curious newcomer, all are welcome to join the Animal Rights Collective Portland (ARCPDX) Book Club! πŸ™ Thank you to Takara for leading and Northwest Animal RIghts Network (NARN), Veggies Do It Better Events, and Northwest VEG for co-hosting. πŸ—“ Monday, January 26th **Discussing the entire book** ⏰ 6:30-8pm πŸ’» Zoom: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/7654622343 πŸ“• Books are suggested and voted on by the group. Our goal is to read books that challenge norms, inspire empathy, reflect the diverse voices and perspectives within the vegan and social justice movements, and ignite conversations about animal rights, environmental sustainability, social equity, and more. πŸ“² In between meetings, we encourage you to chat about the books via Slack!
