Since the early 1990s Greta has been a leading figure in ecofeminist writing, contributing numerous important books and articles. From Greta: This presentation circles back and builds upon my two-page editorial for The Ecologist, “Milking Mother Nature,” submitted on the advent of rBGH legalization in the U.S., but not published until a year later (1994). The exploration was inspired by a recurring dream-image of a cow being “milked” through the neck on a barren landscape infested with oil rigs. The cow looked me directly in the eyes in these recurring dreams and I knew I must write about her—but I didn’t know what to write. The dream persistently recurred at various times (from childhood to retirement), until I took the time to explore the question her expression, her body and her lived experience demanded: “What are the unseen connections between milk and oil?” My research centers in California, where I first had the dream and grew up to ask even larger questions about the connections between feminism, “meat” and “milk” production, colonialism, and ecofeminism.
