About this event

Marineland recently threatened to kill the 30 beluga whales in its care unless it receives government funding. This was after Ottawa rejected the park’s bid to export them to a subpar Chinese aquarium. Since then, a lot of folks in the animal advocacy community have been unsure about what to do next to help the whales still suffering there. At this Animal Justice event, you’ll hear from the people working with government and other stakeholders on a concrete plan for the whales: Charles Vinick and Dr. Lori Marino (Whale Sanctuary Project), Camille Labchuk and Kaitlyn Mitchell (Animal Justice), Melissa Matlow (World Animal Protection Canada), and Dr. Naomi Rose (Animal Welfare Institute). We’ll cover: - The Nova Scotia government approval clearing the way for the Whale Sanctuary Project and what’s next to get it operating - The research and site testing behind the seaside sanctuary plan - Viable options for whales and dolphins who can’t move to the sanctuary - What the federal and Ontario governments can do now—and where advocacy fits in - A first-hand account of the Chinese aquarium Marineland applied to send the whales to - What’s happening with the other animals at Marineland We’ll also use this community gathering to take a high-impact action together. Join us to help the animals trapped at Marineland get the care, safety, and future they need. *We invite folks to have their video on during this event to enhance the sense of community, but it’s not mandatory Charles Vinick - Whale Sanctuary Project Lori Marino - Whale Sanctuary Project Camille Labchuk - Animal Justice Kaitlyn Mitchell - Animal Justice Melissa Matlow - World Animal Protection Canada Naomi Rose - Animal Welfare Institute Hosted by Kimberly Carroll
