The world is consuming more animal protein, taking a toll on animals and the environment. Advocates propose reforming animal agriculture in myriad ways, which can often conflict with one another. Industrialization promises to become more efficient and reduce greenhouse gas emissions over time, but often at the cost of concentrating local pollution sources and harming animal welfare. Meanwhile, more naturalistic farming methods—like organic and regenerative—aim to remediate environmental damage, yet struggle to meet global demand. During this talk Matthew Hayek, an environmental scientist and Associate Professor at New York University's Department of Environmental Studies, will use the latest research to unpack the efficacy and constraints of these systems, sorting through issues of scale, biology, and physics. Beyond the data, he will challenge you to imagine what the future of our food system really looks like, and what a protein-demanding world really means for animals and landscapes.
