Feeding The World? Environmental Governance of Industrial Livestock's Appetite for Latin American Soy CRILS Online Workshop | Tuesday 25 February | 1600-1800 GMT | Register here Industrial animal agriculture’s desire for efficiency and standardisation fuels the ever-expanding production and trade of crop-based feed commodities, chiefly soya products for their nutrition and efficiency. Soy has risen to be one of the world’s most economically significant and environmentally destructive agri-food commodities, with its reliance on fossil fuels and the demands of consuming regions (e.g. the USA, China and the EU) driving significant changes in the agricultural practices and food systems of producing regions (e.g. Brazil, Argentina). The impacts of soy production and trade include land-use change, habitat destruction, soil deterioration, greenhouse gas emissions and changes to gender and social structures. This Critical Research on Industrial Livestock Systems (CRILS) Network workshop will analyse pathways for environmental governance of Brazilian soy to limit the harmful effects of its global value chain and explore strategies for building internationalist solidarity against the impacts of feed.
