About this event
The “U Street Corridor” neighborhood was an important African-American cultural and nightlife hub from the 1920s through the ’40s. Our scenic hike at moderate pace will feature the 1922 Lincoln Theatre, where local jazz greats like Duke Ellington once performed, rooftop bars, trendy DJ lounges, vibrant murals, and a scenic spot which overlooks several neighborhoods; you’re welcome to bring friends and family 😊 The following groups, which I also organize, will accompany us:
Meetup.com/Veggie
Meetup.com/CityWalk
Facebook.com/groups/CityWalks
Meeting location : Ghion Ethiopian Restaurant ( we’re having dinner here AFTER the hike ), 2010 9th St NW, Washington, DC 20001; the hike starts here and finishes here: https://goo.gl/maps/VzUxbkhf8c6rV4bM8
Happy Hour : Ghion has yummy Ethiopian food with vegan options. Please order whatever you want, you don’t need to be vegan or vegetarian to be our friend; when you’re ordering food, please tell the attendant about your dietary restrictions: https://www.ghionethiopeanrestaurant.com/order/
Your expectation : Our walk will be 4 miles long on hilly terrain at moderate pace; there’s some bare soil in the trails, so you want to wear tennis shoes.
Highlights : Meridian Hill Park Drum Circle; Lincoln Theater; The Howard Theater; 930 Club; several murals.
Metro : U Street/African-American Civil War Memorial/Cardozo, which serves the Yellow and Green lines.
Parking : Reeves Center Garage @ 1427 U Street, NW.
We’re different from other groups : You may keep your RSVP marked as “attending” with us, even if you’re not sure. We start on time, but we don’t need an exact headcount. The events you marked as “attending” on Meetup.com are a lot easier to find, open, and get directions to, which may come in handy if your schedule frees up in the last minute and you can join our adventure 😊
FAQ 1 : What if I don’t know anyone else in the group? Answer: you are super-welcome, our group is very receptive, and many of our members did not know anyone else when they first joined.
FAQ 2 : Do I have to be a vegetarian to belong to this group? Answer: we hold happy hours at places which offer vegan options; however, order whatever you want: you don’t have to be a vegetarian or a vegan in order to be our friend.
Best practices : You may want to wear sunscreen; your shoes may get dirty because there will be parts with exposed soil; I recommend wearing tennis shoes and not wearing slippers or sandals; I don’t recommend carrying a heavy bag; and “power walking” or out-pacing the group is a bad idea, because we’ve already had a few slips and trips-and-falls.
Dogs : Well-behaved dogs on leash are welcome at the time I’m writing this, but please read the signs before we enter Meridian Hill Park.
Questions? If you have a question for your Organizer, I’m pretty busy during the week, so I’ll try to combine your answer with last-minute reminders, so please bear with me until we get closer to the event’s date and time.
