Working Eco-Logically: Lessons from VINE Sanctuary

GU-CAS warmly welcomes you to an online seminar with pattrice jones! Ecocide is driven by speciesism, and speciesism is entangled with other forms of oppression, such as racism, ableism, and homophobia. Only by understanding these entanglements as they manifest in injurious situations can scholars and activists hope to engender substantial and sustainable change. Following an overview of the fundamentals of intersectional thinking, this talk will focus on how to work at the conjunctions of multiple forms of oppression, drawing upon VINE Sanctuary’s 20+ years of experience in working for social and environmental justice while caring for and learning from hundreds of survivors of speciesist violence. In addition to learning from numerous case examples, attendees will walk away with a method of identifying particularly promising sites for potential interventions. Welcome! *** pattrice jones is a co-founder of VINE Sanctuary, an LGBTQ-led multi-species community that works for social and environmental justice and animal liberation. A former tenant organizer and antiracist educator, jones has lectured on the theory and praxis of social change activism and authored two books. The Oxen at the Intersection (Lantern Books, 2014) uses a failed attempt to rescue two oxen as a case study of the perils of failing to attend adequately to the intersections between animal exploitation and other forms of oppression.
