About this event
Heart disease touches us all. It holds the long-standing title as the leading cause of death in the US despite the millions of statins, beta-blockers, ACE inhibitors, anticoagulants, and aspirin prescribed every year. Fortunately, there’s another promising path we can take to protect our hearts. In this monthly series, you’ll hear the powerful and evidence-based facts about the relationship between cardiovascular health and the food on your plate. We’ll explore the science and the health benefits of consuming a low-fat, whole food, plant-based diet with our guest medical experts, including cardiologists and nutritionists.
In February, we're joined by Chiti Parikh, MD. While growing up in India, Dr. Parikh developed an interest in ancient traditions of yoga and meditation before moving to the United States as a teenager. After college, she embarked on a solo spiritual journey through Southeast Asia, where she advanced her interest in eastern medicine. She went on to become a physician, completing her internal medicine residency at New York Presbyterian – Weill Cornell Medical Center. Dr. Parikh is now an assistant professor at Weill Cornell Medical College, board-certified in internal medicine and a Diplomate of the American Board of Integrative and Holistic Medicine. She co-founded Integrative Health at NYPH – Weill Cornell Medicine, serving both patients and employees. Her new book Intentional Health was just published in January.
Heart to Healthy Heart is created and hosted by PPMNY community members, Ben Martens, Judy Zerden, and Jim Spellos, who have each experienced heart conditions and found healing and hope through a whole food, plant-based lifestyle.
