Release Emily: Educational Outreach
Organized by Buttonwood Park Zoo
Date and time
Sunday | October 4 2026 | 11:00 am
About this event
Emily is a wild-born Asian elephant, taken from her family when she was three years old. She has been in the Buttonwood Park Zoo for 57 years.
The Zoo's is celebrating Emily's "birthday", so let's do some outreach to teach folks that in 2026, wild animals are not ours to display and hold captive for a lifetime.
Join us for a peaceful protest and educational outreach event.
I'll have postcards to be signed, thanks to Massachusetts for Elephants, to send to Mayor Mitchell, letting him know from you that Emily should be sent to a sanctuary.
Background from In Defense of Animals:"Emily’s story is echoed in zoos everywhere, where aging elephants are left to die without ever knowing the freedom to roam, forage, mate, and form friendships with elephants of their choosing. After reading, please take action on the alert at the end of this blog to help make Emily’s retirement to a warm, spacious sanctuary a reality before it is too late."
Join us and message me with any questions.
Some signage and outreach materials will be supplied or bring your own and thanks!
Parking should be plentiful in the parking lot. I'll be there to meet you around 10:45am.
