About this event
EAGxVirtual 2023 will bring together ambitious individuals from around the world who share the aim of effective altruism: to identify the world’s most pressing problems and the best solutions to them, and put them into practice. The conference will feature opportunities to hear from experts across many cause areas of effective altruism (EA), such as global health, existential risk, animal welfare, and others. You will be able to meet and connect with others involved in the EA community through one-on-one meetings and office hours with experts – whatever your current level of engagement.
We are hoping to see many participants from around the world, particularly those who have not been able to attend in-person events. This will probably be the most accessible EA conference in years – we encourage anyone with a genuine interest in EA to apply!
You can expect:
Opportunities to hear from experts across many cause areas, including Peter Singer, Bruce Friedrich, Carl Robichaud, Olga Kikou, Neel Nanda, and others
Action-oriented content that will be relevant to people from different contexts and locations
Schedule tailored for participants from different time zones
Career fair where you can meet various EA-aligned organizations and nonprofits
Extensive ambassador program connecting attendees to more experienced community members
Always-available virtual venue (GatherTown) for unstructured conversations, socials, and private meetings
Schedule
The event will begin with introductory-level content and a career fair on Friday. Saturday and Sunday will have full-day schedules with 30+ hours of live-streamed content.
You can join anytime based on your availability and access the recordings for the sessions you missed.
The agenda includes:
Talks and discussions on the latest ideas at the frontiers of the EA movement
Meetups, networking, and social activities
Lightning talks from attendees
The tentative schedule is available here (all times are in UTC). The final schedule will be available on the Swapcard app.
What do previous event attendees say?
“At EAGxVirtual, the geographic diversity struck me as being very good and substantially better than what I recall from in-person EAG events. At one point, I had a great conversation with people from Moscow, Australia, India, Tanzania, & a student in Costa Rica. It's hard to do that at an in-person conference.”
“Being plugged-in to the EA community via local, city-level chapters is one thing, but to connect with EAs worldwide that are on a similar journey exploring pathways to high-impact careers and more effective thinking really energised me as an EA concerned with maximising outcomes.”
Application process
We welcome all who have a genuine interest in learning more or connecting, including those who are new to effective altruism. Admissions will not be based on prior EA engagement or EA background knowledge.
EAGxVirtual is free. The deadline for applications is 11:59 pm UTC on Thursday, 16 November.
