The Representation of Animals in Politics – From Theory to Practice

Since the political turn, animals have also been part of political, democratic and animal rights scholarship. To get more insights into today’s state of science in the field of political representation of animals we are happy to announce a talk by Jonathan M. Hoffmann (University of Warwick, UK). In his talk, Jonathan will argue that animals ought to be included in democratic decisions. He will go into the theoretical challenges of the democratic inclusion of animals. This includes questions such as: which animals are entitled to be included in democratic decisions? And can animals be represented despite being unable to authorise or hold accountable their representatives? He will also discuss questions of institutional design - should animals be represented by parties, ombudspersons, NGOs, or dedicated representatives of animals in parliament? Finally, connecting these arguments with his study of the actual landscape of animal representation and its most important stakeholders, Jonathan provides an outlook on how democracy may be reformed to give animals their voice.
