International Day of Action Against Octopus Farms

Last year we joined forces with organizations worldwide in the campaign to stop octopus farming, and great things came from this global activism! 1) State authorities shut down the only octopus farm posing as a research facility in the US (Hawai'i). 2) Bill HB1153 - Prohibiting Octopus Farming was introduced in the House Agriculture and Natural Resources Committee in the State of Washington in the United States and passed the first committee vote with overwhelming support from policymakers and people across the globe. ACTIVISM WORKS! We must continue to raise awareness of the increasing exploitation of octopuses! Join us again this year to continue raising awareness and pushing for policy changes to protect octopuses! Let's unite to show our rejection of all octopus farming and against plans for the world's first industrial-scale farm in Spain! ABOUT OCTOPUSES: Octopuses are amazing animals, as Elena Lara, research director of CIWF, has shown. They are solitary and very intelligent. Condemning these animals to live in a tank, isolated and without stimuli, would seriously affect their development and general well-being. Octopuses have great sensitivity and feel pain and emotions. They are solitary beings. We cannot and should not overcrowd them in tanks and execute them. We should not condemn them to such a life of misery. The scientific community rejects octopus farming and raises its voice against this atrocity. Jennifer Mather, from the University of Lethbridge in Canada, determines that for octopuses, "intensive farming systems are inevitably hostile". In "Intensive Octopus Farming: A Recipe for Disaster," Dr. Elena Lara points out that there is no legislation to protect the welfare of octopuses on farms, leaving them unprotected from suffering and cruel slaughter methods. It would be irresponsible for legislators to allow this. We all want a fair society for all Beings where respect, ethics, and empathy are the fundamental pillars. Octopuses and all other animals urgently need it. We demand that the administrations in charge not allow the Canary Islands, Spain, or any other place to open these octopus extermination centers. When injustice becomes evident, we must fight for justice. - We demand an immediate halt to this project that will condemn and enslave hundreds of thousands of animals. - We demand that the port authority of Las Palmas, the Government of the Canary Islands, and the City Council of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria immediately stop this project intended by the company Nueva Pescanova. - We demand commitment, sensitivity, and political responsibility since it is in their hands to stop this atrocity. As long as we continue to sow death and pain, there will be no peace on the planet; we are the change and can create it. Thank you all for joining us and giving voice to the octopuses on this day.
