Resistance and Repression: How the Government Targets Social Movements and How We Can Fight Back

In this workshop, attorney Brad Thomson will discuss how the government tries to keep activists from being effective and how activists can combat this repression. He will discuss the history of the FBI's Counterintelligence Program (COINTELPRO), grand juries, and more. There will be a question and answer segment at the end of the workshop. Brad Thomson works at People’s Law Office as a civil rights and criminal defense lawyer. In addition to being a lawyer, Brad has worked as a licensed private investigator and has a background in political organizing. Brad’s work at People’s Law Office has focused on civil rights litigation against the Chicago Police, including suits for wrongful conviction, death during incarceration, false arrest, police shootings and other cases of state violence. Additionally, he has successfully obtained the release for a number of political activists who spent decades in prison, including the MOVE 9 and Black Liberation elder Mutulu Shakur. Brad’s legal interests also include aspects of animal law, particularly the criminalization of animal rights activists. He has studied and written about the Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act (AETA) and has worked on cases defending animal liberation activists who were charged under the AETA.
