About this event
This year, in late September & early October, between the holidays of Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur, some religious Jewish communities engage in kaporos. During this ritual, practitioners often handle and slaughter live chickens. Since 2018, Jewish Veg has partnered with the Alliance to End Chickens as Kaporos to make practitioners aware of how we can create a kinder kaporos. Our intention is to assure Jewish families that no one is protesting religious rituals, but first and foremost, we’re advocating for a thoughtful, more humane way to perform kaporos. A large part of Jewish Veg's work is to teach practitioners different methods to perform this ritual. Join Jewish Veg Director of Programming Sara Eifler and Jodi Graber, for a conversation on how to create kinder kaporos actions. Also learn about what Jewish Veg does throughout the year to create a friendly, engaged, passionate plant-based community and promote animal rights.
Guest Speaker: Sara Eifler (she/they) is Director of Programming of Jewish Veg. She holds a BA from Brandeis University and is a current rabbinic student at ALEPH: Alliance for Jewish Renewal. Sara believes in a Jewish ethic of responsibility and care toward animals and the earth and is passionate about global food justice. She has conducted over 50 presentations in the last two
years at synagogues, Hillels, JCCs, and other Jewish institutions transdenominationally across
the US. Sara was recently selected as a 2021 honoree of Women Building the Future by Vegan Women Summit and Impossible Foods.
Guest Speaker: Jodi Graber (she/her) brings her passion for health, well-being and her Jewish heritage to Jewish Veg. In 2007, Jodi began her studies at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition (IIN) and is a certified health coach. While studying at IIN, she learned more about a veg lifestyle and realized that for health and moral reasons she needed to change her eating habits. Once she understood Judaism’s teachings regarding the care and treatment of animals, the choice to be vegan was solidified.
