In_2018_California_voters_passed_Proposition_12_a_ballot_initiative_banning_the_intensive_confinement_of_egg_laying_chickens_mother_pigs_and_veal_calves_raised_in_California_and_prohibiting_the_sale_of_eggs_pork_and_veal_in_California_from_facilities_anywhere_using_those_practices_After_multiple_unsuccessful_attempts_by_meat_and_egg_industry_trade_groups_to_challenge_the_law_the_Supreme_Court_will_hear_arguments_on_the_constitutionality_of_Proposition_12_on_October_11_National_Pork_Producers_Council_v_Ross_The_National_Pork_Producers_Council_and_the_American_Farm_Bureau_Federation_argue_that_California_is_unconstitutionally_regulating_interstate_commerce_The_Law_Ethics_Animals_Program_will_host_a_distinguished_panel_to_discuss_the_case_and_its_potential_impacts_just_two_days_after_oral_arguments_This_discussion_led_by_LEAP_Faculty_Co_Director_Jon_Lovvorn_will_feature_Amy_Chyao_of_the_Humane_Society_of_the_United_States_Rucha_A_Desai_of_Fairmark_Partners_LLP_and_Brian_Frazelle_YLS_10_of_the_Constitutional_Accountability_Center_who_all_filed_amicus_briefs_in_support_of_Proposition_12_in_the_case_Together_they_will_explore_some_of_the_far_reaching_consequences_of_this_case_not_only_for_nonhuman_animal_welfare_but_also_for_human_health_labor_rights_states_power_to_regulate_commerce_within_their_borders_and_beyond_Jon_Lovvorn_is_Faculty_Co_Director_of_the_Law_Ethics_Animals_Program_at_Yale_Law_School_a_Senior_Research_Scholar_and_Lecturer_in_Law_He_also_serves_as_Chief_Counsel_for_Animal_Protection_Litigation_for_the_Humane_Society_of_the_United_States_and_as_a_board_member_and_or_legal_advisor_to_other_animal_and_environmental_protection_organizations_Amy_Chyao_is_the_Supreme_Court_Litigation_Fellow_with_the_Humane_Society_of_the_United_States_She_oversaw_the_development_of_an_amicus_brief_discussing_the_public_health_and_food_safety_issues_related_to_Prop_12_Prior_to_working_with_HSUS_she_was_an_associate_attorney_with_Earthjustice_She_received_her_JD_from_Harvard_Law_School_Rucha_A_Desai_is_an_attorney_with_Fairmark_Partners_LLP_where_she_specializes_in_antitrust_litigation_and_focuses_on_sustainability_factory_farming_and_greenwashing_issues_She_represents_amici_small_and_independent_farming_businesses_state_farmers_unions_and_farm_advocacy_organizations_that_are_in_support_of_Proposition_12_The_amicus_brief_argues_that_Proposition_12_will_promote_diversity_of_production_and_expand_rather_than_constrict_market_opportunities_for_many_pork_producers_She_received_her_JD_from_NYU_School_of_Law_in_2016_Brian_Frazelle_YLS_10_is_a_Senior_Appellate_Counsel_at_the_Constitutional_Accountability_Center_CAC_which_submitted_an_amici_curiae_brief_on_behalf_of_law_professors_support_of_Proposition_12_Prior_to_joining_CAC_Brian_was_an_attorney_at_the_Privacy_and_Civil_Liberties_Oversight_Board_and_held_a_fellowship_at_Public_Citizen_Litigation_Group_
